    • Align 38 and 45 so tens are above tens and ones are above ones.
    • Add the ones: 8 + 5 = 13. Write 3 in the ones place.
    • Exchange the other 10 ones for 1 ten and carry it into the tens column.

    • Add the tens, including the carried ten: 3 + 4 + 1 = 8 tens. Write 8 in the tens place.

The key insight: When digits add to more than 9, you make a new ten to carry over!
