Aoife has a dentist appointment at 9:15 am. The receptionist writes it down in 24-hour time.

What time does the receptionist write?

  1. 1

Check if it's morning or afternoon

    • The time says 'am' so it's morning
    • Morning times stay almost the same in 24-hour format
  2. 2

    Add the leading zero

    • Single-digit hours need a zero in front
    • 9 becomes 09, minutes stay as 159:15 am = 09:15

The receptionist writes 09:15.

The key insight: Morning times just need a leading zero - no maths needed!

Watch out: 9:15 am = 9:15 (no leading zero). 24-hour time always uses two digits for hours: 01, 02, 03... up to 23.

Mistakes to watch for

These are the misconceptions we see most often in convert between time formats, including the ones our practice questions are specifically designed to catch.

  • Adding 12 to all pm times (including 12 pm which stays as 12:00)
  • Writing 12:30 am as 12:30 instead of 00:30
  • Forgetting to add/subtract 12 when converting
