Both sides of the semicolon are complete sentences: 'The rain battered the windows' and 'the match went ahead anyway'. Because a semicolon does not end the sentence, no capital should follow it - but section C shows 'The' instead of 'the'. Correct: The rain battered the windows; the match went ahead anyway.

Where should the colon go?

    Find the introducing statement

    • Read up to where the list starts: 'You will need the following' - this is the introduction.
    • Check it makes sense on its own as an announcement. It does.

    Place the colon at the handover point

    • The colon goes exactly where the introduction hands over to the list: 'You will need the following: a waterproof coat...'
  3. 3

    Check the list commas

    • The items after the colon still take list commas, with 'and' before the last item - that part was already correct.

The corrected sentence is: 'You will need the following: a waterproof coat, sturdy boots, a packed lunch and a water bottle.'

The key insight: A colon is a drum roll: the words before it announce, the words after it deliver.

Watch out: 'You will need the following, a waterproof coat, sturdy boots...'. A comma cannot introduce a list - it just becomes the first of many confusing commas. The announcing job needs a colon.
